WordPress download plugin is a utility plugin that does one thing, and does it perfectly. It may sound simple, but this feature plugs a hole in current set of WordPress plugin functionality. As a site admin you must be aware that you can search and install WordPress plugins directly from the dashboard, or you can upload the plugin as zip files, assuming you received it from another site (for example, a commercial plugin). Once installed, all plugins list themselves inside Dashboard -> Plugins page. After deactivating and deleting them, they simply disappear. All files are removed from the server instantly. WordPress does not allow you to backup or download the plugins before you jettison them from your site. If you also manage your server and are fairly comfortable doing so, you may find a more contrived way to download installed plugins via directory manager app or FTP. Obviously, this requires more than a single click and not for everyone.

What exactly are plugins and how this plugin helps you save time or bail you out from difficult situations? Plugins are files and/ or directories, which are created inside your WordPress installation (defined by WordPress) when you first install them. Both active and deactivated files reside inside them. When you upload zip package of a plugin, WordPress extracts it and places the directory inside it in the plugins folder. Our plugin allows you to reverse the process. Once you have installed the plugin, go to “Downloads -> Settings” interface to configure some options

A) Configure Download Monitor basic settings

• Admin Options: Remove Tinymce Button – Removes the SDM Downloads button from the WP content editor (default: unchecked).
• Color Options: Download Button Color – Select a default color of the download button (default: green).

B) Add a new download

To configure a new download follow these steps:

1. Go to “Downloads->Add New” interface in your WP admin
2. Enter a title for your download
3. Add a description for the download
4. Select the file from your computer and upload it (or use an URL of the file)
5. Select an image for the download (it will be displayed as a thumbnail on the front end)
6. Publish it

Add a template to NextGEN Gallery that provides multiple-file downloads for trade/media galleries. NextGEN Gallery is one of the best gallery plugins for WordPress because it is very flexible and has a nice, simple admin. This plugin adds a new gallery template that lets you select multiple images from the gallery to be downloaded as a ZIP archive.

NB: the Photocrati version of NextGEN Gallery can impact the performance of your server, and not all of the old plugin’s functionality works. You might want to consider using NextCellent Gallery instead — it’s a fork of the original NextGEN Gallery with continued support and compatibility, without the performance impacts.

NextGEN Download Gallery is targetted at creating “Trade/Media” areas on websites, allowing journalists to easily download multiple product images. It’s apparently very popular with photographers too.

A ‘Download’ option is added to both List and Grid modes in the Media Library.
Choose the attachments you want to export, click the button, and a zip file of those attachments is created that you can then download.

Selecting for download in List mode

In List mode the ‘Download’ option appears in the Bulk Actions dropdown. Select the attachments by checking the checkboxes, choose ‘Download’ in the dropdown, then click ‘Apply’.

In Grid mode, first click the ‘Bulk Select’ button. Then click on the attachments you want to download and hit the ‘Download’ button.

Download options

Before the zip file is created, you’ll see a) how many files will be downloaded, and b) how big the uncompressed files are.
By default, you are also given the option to:

• Include or exclude image intermediate sizes.
• Include in your download the folder structure you use in your uploads folder (e.g. year/month) or have all files downloaded in a single folder.

You can set a maximum (uncompressed) file size to be downloaded in the plugin settings, found in Settings > Media.

By default, zip files are automatically removed in 1 – 2 hours, or you can delete them yourself.

If you want to keep the download files inaccessible to others, you can use the ‘Make downloads secure’ option in Settings > Media.
This creates a .htaccess file in the folder where the download zip files are kept, preventing direct access.

You can also choose to encrypt and password-protect the zip files. However please note that in most cases the standard Windows zip facility
will not be able to open the files – you will need to use something like 7-Zip instead.

However there’s no point in using this feature or the .htaccess one unless you also have some means of preventing direct access to the attachments
themselves in the Uploads folder.
